Why are Inverters now rated in kVA instead of kW?

Newer inverters allows settings to be changed which enhance the systems performance.

When the power factor or reactive power control setting is changed - kW no longer correctly defines the inverter's capacity.
The inverters capacity in these case is made up of real power (kW) and reactive power (kVAR) which via the cos/sine rule specify the apparent power (kVA) of the inverter.
